A Chance Encounter?

As John lay there, half asleep, not really awake either, his thoughts drifted off to his absent friend whom he missed so deeply.  He prayed to God and hoped she was well, and that somehow she knew he was thinking about her.  Then as he stared at Luna shining brightly through his window, he thought of her once more, then drifted off to sleep.

As the Star-crossed Winter Angel walked in the snow-covered field, his magnificent Black wings stretched out on both sides of him.  Off in the distance, a young woman was just standing in the snow, crying, shivering, and very much alone.  She was wearing very little clothing, and was obviously very cold.

The Angel began to walk past the young women when she spoke  “John what is going on? Why am I here?”

The Angel looked at her, confused, and finally said “John?  Oh you must mean that body over there sleeping!” he said as he pointed to a bed, which lay below them, “I am not John Milady, he is.  I am only a reflection of his heart.  I am sorry. “

“I don’t understand this!” she remarked, “What is going on!”

“In this place it is not yours to understand, only believe and accept, here the truth is all you see and feel.  Ever.” the Angel stated.

“I am still confused,” she said as she began to shiver again. “Why…”

“Forgive me Milady, you are cold.” the Angel interrupted, “Here, I will make you warm with my wings.” he continued as he approached here.

“Trust me my friend, I could never hurt you ever.” he said as she slightly started to back up from him.  When she stopped the Angel wrapped his wings around her, and her body began to warm up.

“Hmmm…It is not your body that is cold Milady; your soul is freezing as well.  Why is this?” he asked.

“I don’t want to talk about it.  Let’s just say part of me is dying.” she replied.

“Well I can not let that happen,” he said as he removed his wings and wrapped them tightly around her as if they were her coat.

“I feel strangely warmer now.” she then stated, “strange, but comforting.”

“I have given you my soul, as well as my wings.” the Angel said, “you will be…”

“Your soul!!!”  she interrupted, “What will happen to you now?”

“I will die!!!” the Angel stated as he bowed and disappeared before her.

In the bed below, John lay dreaming of his friend. He was dreaming of a time, where all they felt was happiness, as they laughed and shared secrets with one another.
In his dream his friend recited a poem, in the form of a story, of an encounter they somehow experienced together.  He woke up to speak to her, but she was not there.  As he sat at his desk, he then saw the black and gray feather on his keyboard…

He dared not ask how this could be…

“I do not know if this is myth, legend, or whether any of it has any truth to it whatsoever…but this tale has been told and shared for over a thousand years.  And now, I will share it with you my son…”

Preludium

“Seeking shelter from the storm that had now followed him for miles, he took refuge in a small heavily wooded area between two warring kingdoms.  Not the wisest of ideas it would prove, but at the time, he figured it was better then the latter, since by now he was completely soaked, and chilled to the bone.  As fate would have it, the lightning started shortly afterwards.

By the time the third lightning bolt had thundered down upon the wooded area that he had stopped in, several fires had begun to burn, and he now felt it best to get back on the main road once more.  Some say it would have been better if he had died that day, and some say…well you decide that for yourself my son.”

The Promise

Grabbing the reins of his steed tightly, he quickly made his way back to the road amidst the heavy rain, and now of course, the smoke from the fires burning around him as well.  With his horse rearing at every step, he hastened his pace for fear of losing his only travelling companion.  That’s when he saw the trapped bear, and the burning limbs above it.  Sighing deeply to himself, he fastened his horse securely to the closet tree away from the flames, and grabbed his sword and headed back towards the bear.

Cautiously, he approached and began to assess exactly why this powerful animal was actually trapped.  Moments later, he realized why…a bear trap, and the animal was caught in it.  Knowing he could not open the trap with the bear still alive, he decided to swing his sword down as hard as he could in hopes of breaking the chain that fastened the trap to the tree.  He was successful…however in the bears anger and fear to get out from under the fallen branches, it managed to catch the mans arm with its claws at least twice.  Then…it scurried off in a direction away from the man and his horse with the trap clanging at every step.

Grasping his arm tightly, he winced in pain as blood flowed and mixed with the heavy falling rain. Making his way back to his horse, he cut off a piece of his cloak to wrap the wound.  Although it did not stop the crimson flow, it did slow it enough for his comfort for the time being.  Then mounting his steed, and lowering his head, he began to ride away for the nearest town as fast as his companion would take him.

With the storm well behind him now, he slowed up his pace to allow his horse the benefit of an easier ride. Looking up he pushed his wet hair from his face for a better view, as soot-laden water trickled in his eyes burning them slightly. As he rubbed them gently he continued to feel the sting causing them to moisten on their own accord, blurring his vision ever so slightly.  When his vision was normal again, he noticed a hooded rider approaching at a very slow pace not too far away.

Many think that because he had no reason to fear this rider at all, he simply continued on as he had been, and paid no mind really.  Then when the two riders were about to pass one another, his heart jumped as the second rider fell to the ground in a heap and lay motionless.  Quickly jumping off his own horse, he knelt down to lend aid in anyway he could to the fallen rider.  He soon realized however, judging by her wounds, there would be nothing he could do but comfort her as she slowly began to pass away before him.

It was then he bound himself to a promise he made to her.  As she looked at him sadly with the eyes of an enchantress…eyes that had the strength of a women, and the wonderment of a child, she asked him to deliver something to her sister high atop a winter mountain peak she then pointed too.  Speaking only the words ‘I promise’, he accepted the cloth wrapped bundle she had uncovered from her cloak.  She then reached up and caressed his face, as a slight smile formed on her lips. He bore only a somber look as she said ‘Thank you’, then died right then and there.

Gently holding that which he now was entrusted with, he stood up and lowered his head slightly in respect.  Almost instantly, not only did the female fade into light and disappear, but so did her horse as well.  Wearing a very perplexed look he gazed at the cloth wrapped bundle in his arms, as it moved slightly.  A few moments later, he got upon his horse, and began to ride towards the snowy mountain…which to him, seemed days away.

As the hours passed, he then began to notice a few things that to him seemed odd to say the least.  The wounds the bear had inflicted upon his arm were completely healed, and he felt no desire for neither water…nor food for that matter.  Once again he looked down at that which he now carried…as it again moved ever so slightly.

What happened to him next some say was a miracle, yet there are others that say it was out of respect for the dead women that the events unfolded the way they did, but either way the fact remains…it did happen.

As he continued to ride in the direction of the mountain, he ended up right in the middle of a war between two Kings.  Atop a hill over looking the battlefield, he looked for a way around the incursion he was seeing below. He saw no other way, but knew he could not get passed it at all.  That’s when the soldiers noticed him standing there, and that’s when the soldiers from both sides, threw their weapons on the ground and yelled to him, that safe passage was his for the receiving.

As the bundle he carried moved once again, he looked at it briefly, then proceeded to slowly ride right through the center of the battlefield.  The only movement from any of the soldiers, was the lowering of their heads, as he passed by them.  Then when he arrived on the other side, he turned his horse around to what was believed as, him wanting to thank them, only to see the two Kings shaking hands, and their soldiers embracing one another as friends would.

Again he gazed at his bundle with a perplexed look.  Supposing…supposing to wonder if it was causing the events he now saw.

Finally he reached the bottom of the mountain. The sun was beginning to set pretty quickly now, and he knew he would have to be at the summit before nightfall, or he would freeze to death.  But he also knew, he now had to go on foot since his horse would not be able to make the trek.  So, putting on his cloak, and raising the hood, he set off on foot for the top of the mountain making sure to keep his bundle, as close to his body as possible, thus ensuring it stayed warm as well.

Slowly he began the last leg of his journey, and slowly he became colder and colder, as he got higher and higher.  Every now and again, he would feel it move, and some say, this drove him to completing the task he had accepted.  No matter what his driving force was, just as the sun became a crimson glow beyond the horizon, he arrived at the summit and knocked at the door of the structure he now saw before him.

Within moments, a weary eyed women answered.  He simply uncloaked the wrapped bundle he held, and passed it to the women with a bow.  As a tear of joy fell from her eye, she gently took the bundle, and quickly headed back inside while another women grabbed the mans hand, and escorted him inside to a place by a warm fire, then left him there alone.

It is said, that as the minutes passed, he heard what seemed like people crying and rose from his warm seat to investigate.  Opening a door he was sure the cries were coming from behind, he watched in amazement as the women who answered when he arrived, unwrapped the bundle he had delivered, and placed a beating heart upon the chest of a young girl.  As the heart began to beat faster, and as it slowly began to turn a brighter red, the young girl opened her eyes, and the heart faded away into her chest  She then turned to the man and smiled, and mouthed a silent thank you.

Awe struck, he stared at what he had just seen until he figured out, it was the heart of the enchantress, and a spell that wakened the girl…but that, was not the case.

As the young girl continued to smile at him he began to feel a very strange sensation within his chest.  Placing his hand upon his own heart, he began to feel what could only be described as…two heartbeats.  Gazing at her very perplexed as she to placed her hand on her heart as well, her smile turning to a wide grin as she bowed her head towards him.  Returning the bow in kind and with a slight smile of his own, he turned, closed the door, and silently left.

Postludium

"You see the power within the enchantress’s heart diminished for each act of love and care it showed towards another.  By the time the man arrived, it was not the enchantress’s heart at all that brought the girl back, but the power and care that he himself carried in keeping a promise to one he did not know…

Legend says, whether he wants it or not, wishes it or not, he will always feel the beat of that heart…no matter how far away, how broken, or how sad it may become."

/W00t...An update ^^

An Unknown Journey

I walked alone that midwinter’s night. Down the everlasting road.  To where you might ask? I would not know.  I never know. Until I am called that is.  Called by Luna herself.  I named it that because, well honestly, I never know how long it will be.  Sometimes, it’s a mere 5 steps, others 50…and then there are those times, it’s 500 or so.  So to me, in some ways…it is everlasting.

Luna was high in the sky…full as she often is before the mist comes to me.  She had a red hue this night though, which seemed…somewhat odd to me actually seeing as how it was early winter and all. And as I thought, is it not too cold for mist, sure enough it began to form before my eyes. I paused for a moment, and took a deep breath.  Then, with my head held low, I entered the foggy shroud and walked the path to its end.

As the mist began to clear, I slowly raised my head and began to take in the surroundings.  Where was I brought this time?  When was I brought this time? At the moment, I truly had no idea so I continued walking a bit farther…searching.  Searching, for something or someone, that looked remotely familiar to me.  I did make note of one thing immediately though.  The trees were somewhat different. There weren’t as many coniferous trees here.  Seemed, mostly a cross between deciduous and tropical in a way.  Where had Luna sent me this time?  I still…did not know.

Then, as though she had heard my query, I began to smell the salty air and I began to see what looked like a village or a town in the distance, which…I began to hasten my pace towards.  It was getting warmer as well.  Compared to where I had just left, it seemed…to be getting much warmer indeed.

I removed my coat at this point and flung it over my shoulders, as I began to see people walking about.  I could not tell their nationality yet, but the women and girls seemed to be wearing kimonos or robes of some fashion.  Odd I thought.  Even odder yet, these people do not seem to be East Asian or anything.  Actually, they appeared to be quite ‘pale’ skinned I guess for lack of a better word.  I did not let this hinder me in anyway though, and I continued walking until one of the elder women spoke to me,

“Sir,” she began as she bowed her head “You’re the one that walks the ‘Towa No Michi’ aren’t you?”

“The what? I’m sorry?” I asked perplexed.

“The Towa No Michi…the Everlasting Road?”

I was dumbfounded at this point and of all the things I could have said, I simply uttered “Uh…I guess.” As I wondered how this women knew this.

“Oh!” she began “You want to go that way then.” She said as she pointed. “What you seek lies that way.”

“Excuse me?” I started to ask, “What makes you think I seek anything?”

She just smiled coyly at me “You seek the ghost behind your eyes do you not?”

“…”

“Yes, that’s what I though.” She then said to me matter of factly “She’s that way.” She added and pointed again.

I was extremely confused at this point.  First at how she had the slightest clue about my ‘inner secrets’ and at how confident she was that this ‘ghost’ was even here.  But, Luna often has surprises for me, so I started walking in the direction she had pointed all the same.  All the while, wondering what was in store for me when I got…wherever happened to be, where it was I was headed.

I turned around once, to see how far I had walked, but the village was now gone.  Not out of sight, just…gone. How strange I thought to myself.  Then I once again turned and continued walking in my previous direction.

Sure enough, a short while later I stumbled upon a lone female sitting by herself on a rock by a river.  She appeared to be writing something. Not wanting to disturb her at all, I just stood there and watched her for a bit until…until well, she began to speak.

“Hello my friend.” She began “No hauntingly compassionate words for me this day?”

Yeah…that’s when it happened.  My heart totally skipped a beat and I almost died right there and then.

“You?” I asked totally in shock “How? Umm…Why are you here?”

“I can go if you wish!” she then said in a slightly sarcastic way.

“No.” I replied, “It’s just…”

“Just what?” she then interrupted just as sarcastically, as she stood up and turned around.

“It just…” I then said with a tremendous amount of hesitation “…I wasn’t expecting you at all.”

“Oh...that’s too bad” she retorted in a sad way “I wanted to say thank you in a different way this time and not just a voice in the night. I should probably go then.”

Yup…heart skipping time once again “No please?” I then begged, “Please don’t leave Milady?” I then added with a bow.

Then I saw her eyes smile and at the same time, a sheepish expression appeared on her face as she sighed slightly “Only if you take my hand, and walk me through the meadow once more.”

“I would enjoy that very much Milady.” I then replied with another bow “However…when Luna appears here, you know I must leave.”

“Yes I know.” She replied sadly “But until then…”

“Indeed…until then.” I interrupted her with a smirk. “Watch the feathers, they …”

“Tickle!” she said giggling “Not anymore.  I’m used to them now.”

I just simply smiled and placed her hand in mine as we walked and watched the sun setting…both of us happy, yet sad at the same time.

Then of course, in the distance I saw the mist form.  I sadly released her hand and walked towards it, stopping just at its edge.  As I turned around I saw the sadness in her eyes, but we never said a word at all.  I just bowed as the fog engulfed me seeing the sadness in her eyes, and the smile upon her face.

The Place

There is a place I know so very well.  Where…where it is nothing like this place we live now.  A place where only the chosen few can go, a place where…you must be invited, or you shall never see.

It is a wondrous place, happy, free of care and concern.  Where the sun shines each day, and the moon is full and bright each night.  A place where the green grass is endless, and the rolling hills abundant.  Where the only sound drowning out the crashing waves on the shore, is the caw of a passing gull, or the nay of the wild mares that dwell there.

There is a gate to this place, at the end of the forest glade.  And upon this gate, are the names of those who may enter at any time they wish it.  He has seen to this, and inscribed those names himself, knowing…no matter how beautiful and wondrous, it would be an empty place without those names.

If you should stumble upon this place in your travels, and read your name upon the gate that’s there, just leave your sword and shield behind; they are not required at all.  For this gate is my heart, and this place is in my soul, and if your name is there, you are my friend, and you are welcome anytime.
